D is for Dignity

Hi everyone! Today's post is about what we refer to as "dignities" in astrology.

Every astrological sign has a ruling planet. Mars, for example, is the ruling planet of Aries, and the Sun is the ruling planet of Leo.

In an astrological chart, when the planet occupies the sign that it rules, that planet is "in its dignity" or "dignified". They're important, because the energy of a planet in its dignity flows freely, like a river running down hill. I like to think of it as "home field advantage". The planet is extremely comfortable there. For the Sun, it's in its dignity in Leo.

A fantastic position for a planet is in its exaltation. It's not completely at home, but it's like being at your best friend's house. The planet's energy is empowered here. The Sun is exalted in Aries, for example.

Opposite the sign of its exaltation is the sign of its fall. A planet in its fall is weakened, and doesn't operate very effectively. Imagine a river with a lot of rocks and other debris blocking the way. The Sun's fall is in Libra.

Finally, a sign in its detriment is in its most unfavorable location, opposite the sign of its dignity. The Sun is in its detriment in Aquarius; there, it has the hardest time showing its power.

As you look over astrological charts, keep the dignities in mind. You can find charts and explanations of the different rulerships on many excellent astrology websites and in tons of books.

Thanks for tuning in! Come back tomorrow for my "E" post. :)
